Give it a try if you can, you may very well gain a new appreciation~ I got on the DBZ train a bit late, so the manga was already mostly scanslated (the second half, the "Z" part in the anime, was done all the way through Buu) by the time I started getting into it in...maybe about '97 or so. They were just finishing Freeza on US television at the time. I got VHS fansubs of Cell and Buu, and they were definitely a step up from the US version (especially that godawful synthesizer music Funimation used...blech) but when compared with the manga the anime is still definitely more tedious and drawn-out, and with soooo much filler. Isn't that always the case with shonen epics though...they gotta make it as long as possible to reap the profits~
