Force equals mass times acceleration, so if it was seki's strike was weaker, he was actually slower with the Amakakeru then with his normal strike, since the mass of his sword didn't change

OK, going back a few posts. We rotate our fists like the corkscrew punch in TKD. It allows for much more speed and power to the punches as your muscles don't work against the flow of momentum that way. It's hard to explain in text, but if you punch without any rotation and then punch with a proper rotation, you'll feel exactly what I mean.

So it's just a regular twist punch then? Don't most boxers twist there punches anyways?

Battou relies on the friction caused by the pull... thus when I step with my right foot, I have the entire diagonal length from my left hip to my right foot to amass potential energy, and once the katana leaves the scabbard it pretty much flings out. With my left foot forward, I have a lot less distance to cover, so yeah, it'll come OUT faster. But the fling portion of the Battou is greatly diminished, so it just becomes weaker-than-normal slash... >_>

Only the right/left straight is a twist punch. Hook, Upper, and Smash don't have a twist.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the twist punch Luck, I just don't use it. Believe it or not, you can get just as much power from a snap punch as you can from a twist punch. As for twisting the hook and the upper, that just feels weird, but maybe that's just me.

well, if it was just a normal technique, then Date wouldn't have made such a big deal out of it, right?

And Aoki DOES have a couple of serious fights, btw. I really wanted him to win again papaia...

Yeah, I guess there's a reason I've never been the Featherweight Champion of Japan. Of course, living in Jersey could have something to do with it

Well, let's say you notice it on impact. A snap punch simply delivers some force and snaps back while a twist punch is really able to simply drive on. Some serious impact you are getting. Combine that with root and marvel 8O

Actually, you can get the same impact with a snap punch. You just have to aim through your target. I personally prefer a snap punch to a twisting punch, but they really are about the same in power. It just depends on your style.

I do believe it, there are two schools of thought on board breaking tactics. The first in the powerhouse-punch-through which involves tactics as the side kick and the twist punch. The second are the speed-break techniques which include the snap punch and the snap kick. Both are equally effective and equally damaging. Both are equally effective in a street fight. The speed break tactics allow you to strike and return to a defensive position. The powerhouse tactics allow you to punch through a target and move through that target into a potentially better location (usually using the downed target as an obstacle against persuers).

Both tactics are effective and useful 8 ball, and I use both tactics in a fight as well. It's particularly devastating when someone sees me using one and then suddenly I switch to the other.

I know, I can throw both punches equally well, I just prefer the snap punch. I actually use a snap sidekick. I've found one of the best ways to use snap techniques is to actually step through with the punch, so you get the speed of the snap, plus you have the ability to get behind your opponent. By the same token, I know twist puchers who are just as devistating with there hands as I am with my snap punch. It really is a matter of preferance and which one you train more.

Do you turn hips all the way into it with your snap kicks? Do you strike with your foot or shins? Just want to know.

I only use the shins if I am aiming for someone's knee (Thai kick), otherwise, it's usually the foot.

I haven't really conditioned my shins to the point where I can really use them for a powerful kick, so I normally strike with the ball of my foot. For a side kick, I use the blade edge, and yes, I do turn my hips into it. I actually pivot on my support foot so that the heel is pointed at my target, but I pivot back as my kick returns so I don't end up leaving my back exposed. I don't turn as much with front kicks, unless I'm trying to step in or through my opponent..

We use the actual heel for the side kicks (pivoting as well) for the whole physics of it - it's the most stable point of the foot when striking as your entire body weight can be aligned behind that point.

yeah, I strike with the heel part of the blade. If you do a side kick with front part of your foot, you'll break your ankle

Or your toes... There was a guy in our class that tried to kick someone like that and met an elbow block. It ended his martial arts career - his toe was broken that badly.

Tai Kwon Do is more for sport than for self defense, and is technically and tactically flawed on many levels.

A good boxer would maul just about any traditional martial artist.

If you need to learn self defense, try a good MMA / NHB / Vale Tudo gym. If that doesn't work, try a combination of boxing and brazilian jiu-jitsu or muay thai and brazilian jiu-jitsu.

However, if I was looking for self defense or NHB fighting, I WOULDN'T look to anime.

Yes, tai kwon do is more on sport because I'm a tai kwon do player...
